This is a moment of immense pride for space science and Indian-American talent. Indian-origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon has completed the first historic spacewalk of his career by exiting the International Space Station (ISS).

Accompanying him on this challenging 6.5-hour mission (Extravehicular Activity, or EVA) was veteran NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, whose sixth spacewalk was the first. Together, they successfully completed a crucial upgrade to the space station’s power system.

Mission Highlights

The primary objective of Anil Menon and Jessica Meir was to install new hardware on the space station’s ‘3B Power Channel’. This work was done in preparation for the future installation of new solar panels (iROSA).

Why is this upgrade necessary?

The old solar panels on the International Space Station have begun to weaken over time. The installation of new, modern solar panels will significantly increase the space station’s power generation capacity. This will ensure uninterrupted power supply to the ongoing scientific experiments and life-support systems.

Challenges of Spacewalks

Working in the vacuum of space is extremely dangerous and difficult.

Astronauts must work while orbiting the Earth at a speed of approximately 28,000 kilometers per hour.

During this time, they must take every step with utmost caution and safety, facing extreme conditions of extremely hot and extremely cold temperatures.

Three Major Missions in August

This spacewalk was the first in a series of three major missions scheduled for this month (August):

First Spacewalk: Power Upgrade (successfully completed).

August 13: Mission to replace the communications antenna.

August 25: Work to upgrade the data relay system.

Anil Menon’s Journey

Born in America, Anil Menon is an Indian father and a Ukrainian mother. Before joining NASA, he served as a physician, mechanical engineer, and SpaceX’s first flight surgeon.

At a time when India is preparing for its ambitious Gaganyaan mission, the achievements of Indian-origin leaders like Anil Menon give the country a unique identity. Following Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams, Anil Menon is now bringing glory to India in the world of space science.
